They say that it isn’t the BIG action items that truly allow us to see change, but rather the small microscopic decisions we make day in and day out that pile up and help us climb mountains. Have you ever done something over and over long enough that you were able to see the results compounded ten fold in the future? I used to be a chronic starter and stopper. I would get the ball rolling, and then stop before the the snowball effect really took place. I knew this about myself and I hated it… but I just thought it was who I was, until I decided to do something about it.
Insert The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. This was the first personal development book I ever read. It was business focused, but honestly this book changed more of my daily habits in EVERY area of my life than any other book I’ve read.
Think about it… to have your kids grow up and look back and know what a great mother you were did you take them on one huge Disney trip or did you encourage them and make them smile everyday? To lose weight did you stop eating food for one week or did you start to slowly ditch the pop, sub out chips for baked chips, a full candy bar for a few dark chocolate almonds? Did you cross the finish line at the marathon because you just strapped up laces one day and went for it, or trained in small increments over months of time? Did you build that million dollar business because you went ALL in for a month and let every other area of your life fall apart or did you fit in the small moves that matter around your other priorities over a few years?
The compound effect isn’t about being perfect every single day, but rather seeing the big picture everyday and being willing to do something small towards it no matter what life throws at you. To put the “well today is a wash” mentality aside and instead think about how much time is left in the day and what you can still do to change the course of that day you will only get once.
So, let’s try to commit to that ONE thing we can focus on and watch compound the rest of this year and look back on how BIG we rolled that ball!
Maybe save $10 extra dollars a week, maybe give your spouse a complement everyday, maybe take time to yourself to plan out your week every Sunday, maybe spend 1:1 time with your kids weekly, maybe prep your breakfasts ahead of time, maybe swap soda for Zevia or LaCroix, maybe drink 20oz more water each day. The options are endless!
