As I sent my first born off to her first day of PreK this week I started to think of all of the things I want her to remember about the start of this new chapter in her life, both today and when she is older. I was writing a note to her with all of these things and as I was writing found myself thinking how much I needed that reminder too, and how much ANY new chapter or season of life needs grace, understanding, and confidence.
So little ones on your first week of school, and friends during any new season of change…
It’s not what you wear that matters, but why you wear it. This choice represents YOU and your personality, what you feel comfortable and confident in. No other reasons matter. Own what you choose proudly because you’re beautiful in anything you wear because it represents who you are, not because of what it looks like, yes… even Crocs.
Don’t forget to find time to do what brings you comfort daily. My daughter takes about 25 extra minutes each morning to pack up random objects from the house that she’s loving at the moment. I used to do this when I was little too, carry all my “treasures” everywhere in a bag. It made me feel comfortable and safe when I was away from home. Those extra 25 minutes are often frustrating and hard to fit in an already packed morning, but they are SO important to her, and worth every minute if it brings her comfort and peace. This reminded me that although it can be hard to fit in the extra 25-30 mins in the morning for my personal quiet time or a morning workout, those things bring me peace and comfort through the rest of the day and they are NEEDED.
You will make mistakes. Sometimes people will notice and you might feel embarrassed, sometimes only you will see it. Either way remember when you make mistakes is when you learn. Apologize when needed and acknowledge when you’re wrong instead of being ashamed of it. Others around us will make mistakes often too, because nobody is perfect. Remember this is why forgiveness is so important.
Small changes take time to adjust to just the same as big changes do. Nothing clicks overnight. Give yourself grace as you work each week towards your new routine to get comfortable in the flow and working out those kinks. Two weeks from now what seemed hard today will be easier, if you keep trying!
And lastly, its not about what goals you reach or don’t reach, what titles are behind your name, how many friends you have, what clothes you wear, or what number is on the scale. What truly matters is how kind your heart is. Kindness will always win, both with others and with yourself.
